Our Story

Since 1915, Blind Veterans UK (formerly St Dunstan’s) has given invaluable physical and emotional support to blind ex-Service men and women. We work with our beneficiaries and their families – providing training, support and advice, and creating a thriving sporting and social network for life. With our unique expertise, experience and comprehensive range of services, we enable them to lead independent fulfilling lives.

All of the services we provide rely upon donations and the generosity of supporters leaving gifts in their Wills to Blind Veterans UK. With your help in this way we can give more and more blind veterans the chance to regain their independence and make the most of the opportunities available to them.

If you would like more information please call us on 020 7616 7953 or email us.

Please take the time to read Craig's story:

On 22nd March 2007, Corporal Craig ‘Freddie’ Lundberg, a sniper in The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, was serving his second tour of duty in Iraq. His platoon was part of an operation to arrest known insurgents in Basra when a neighbouring unit came under heavy attack. Craig and his men immediately tried to draw the enemy’s fire.

In the fierce fighting that ensued, Craig took a direct hit in the chest from a rocket-propelled grenade. The impact shattered his left arm and sent razor-sharp fragments of burning shrapnel flying into his face.

Craig lost his left eye instantly and his right eye was damaged beyond repair. Incredibly, Craig tried to continue fighting: “I got up and demanded my rifle, but it had been bent by the force of the blast. My mate got me another rifle and I tried to carry on firing. But I only managed a few steps before I collapsed.”

Doctors managed to keep Craig alive but they couldn’t save his sight. Craig was flown back to the UK knowing he would never see again.

Blind Veterans UK came to Craig’s aid whilst he was still recovering from his injuries at Selly Oak hospital in Birmingham. As with all the blind ex-Service people we help, we offered him lifelong support, starting with a week-long rehabilitation course at our specialist centre in Brighton.

Since then, we’ve provided Craig with a specially adapted house near his family in Liverpool and helped him continue his recovery.

A growing number of ex-Service men and women are desperate for support: more World War Two veterans are losing their sight and more young British soldiers are at risk of returning home blind. We promise to help people like Craig for as long as he chooses However, keeping this promise does come at a cost. You see, we must make sure we are in a position to be there for every ex-Service man and woman. But we simply don't know when they will come to us, or for how long they will need our help.

Will you make a very special commitment and remember the work of Blind Veterans UK in your Will?

Is there any cost to our cause or supporters?

No, it's completely free for your cause and supporters. The only cost is to the retailer.

Why do the retailers make a donation?

When you visit a retailer or service through goraise.co.uk they offer a donation as a thank you for your custom. Our partner retailers like to help, but it's also a way of attracting customers, so they essentially put it down as a marketing cost.

Sounds too good to be true – is there a catch?

There’s no catch, and to confirm, it won't cost you a penny!! In fact, there’s £millions worth of retailer commission available every year to fund good causes across the UK. Amazingly, many causes are still unaware of this easy, free way to generate funds through everyday online shopping.

How much of the donation does GoRaise take?

We don’t take a penny of the amount displayed. For all retailers we show a donation rate (% or £), which represents the full amount you are raising for your cause. For clarity, GoRaise is a commercial organisation, and we receive an additional payment from the retailer above and beyond that shown on the site.

Can any cause use GoRaise to fundraise?

Yes – any good cause (an organisation with unselfish goals) can use GoRaise to generate funds, from small community groups to national charities. Your favourite cause may already be registered. If it isn’t, it can be added for free. GoRaise helps charities, sports clubs, PTAs, community groups, churches, youth groups (Girl Guides, Scouts etc) and lots of other great causes.

How do we get paid?

You can choose to receive your money into a bank account or direct donation platform. We pay our causes every quarter and challengers monthly. We'll let you know once the payment has been sent. Please note: causes have to have at least £15 (and Challengers £2) in their account before we make payment
