Race to the Farm 50 Miler

Closing our 2017 season will be a stunning 50 miler taking in the Exe Valley Way from Exford to Tiverton, then following the Grand Western Canal and some proper rural Somerset surroundings along the Two Counties Way to the finish at Roughmoor Farm, just outside Taunton, where there will be a roaring fire and barbecue awaiting you. A proper rustic atmosphere to end what will be an incredible journey for just a day ? ‘The wilds of Exmoor’ are frequently spoken of, but that’s exactly where you will be starting – fast flowing rivers, ancient woodland, rough moors, trees and rocks carpeted in moss and lichen, ferns and bracken everywhere. This truly is a special place, and what’s more the route takes in the infamous Tarr Steps – washed away in the 2014 floods and storms but restored and back to their former glory. You pass through several settlements along the way towards Tiverton, and when you get there you will join the quaint Grand Western Canal; if you have paced yourself sensibly until now this might be a chance to get well ahead of the cut-off, or to put yourself in a winning position, with some pancake flat and super-easy miles. However, don’t go sprinting just yet as there’s still a fair way to go. The Grand Western Canal once went all the way to Taunton, and you will be following its old course through some proper lovely countryside as you get nearer and nearer to the finish ? Roughmoor Farm is described as a beautiful, quintessentially english setting, and that’s just what it is. In the spacious garden you will find hay bales to sit on around the warming fire and can enjoy a barbecue as you watch the flickering flames and the memories of your day come flooding back to you. As 50 milers go, this one is somewhere between the Westcountry Ultra Flat 50 and Hilly 50 in terms of difficulty – suitable to be your first but challenging enough to satisfy the more seasoned 50 mile runner. Varied enough to keep things interesting throughout, and with a special atmosphere at the finish, this race might just become a classic September fixture in years to come ? The wilds of Exmoor are kinda remote, so a coach will take you on the day from near the finish to the start, and you can just run back!
